How do you know what cheeses are vegetarian?
Written by admin on March 20th, 2009
I'm trying to become a vegetarian. I know there is something in some cheeses that makes them non-vegetarian. I know that rennet is bad.
If it says "enzymes" is that also bad? Where do enzymes come from?
Do most restaurants use non-vegetarian cheese? For example, a cheese and broccoli baked potato from Arby's - would a vegetarian eat that?
Cheese is not vegetarian or vegan. You can make a cheese substitue from soy, pimentos or other foods that are not dairy or meat based.
Cheese is produced from putrified milk products, there fore it is dairy not vegetarian. Enzymes can be good or bad, depending on where they originated and what form they currently are in. Enzymes in cheese can cause gas and bloating….the putrified dairy product.
Imitation cheese food may be what you are asking about.
Most restaurants use american cheese which is still dairy.

You may have vegetarianism confused with vegan-ism. There are Vegetarians who eat dairy products and eggs. I know a few who will eat fish or shellfish. There are some vegetarians who will eat dairy but not eggs. Then there are vegans who eat no animal products at all. They do not eat meat, dairy, seafood, eggs, gelatin, honey or animal fats. Now, I must say that I am a meat eater & I think that vegitarianism is a great, great thing. However, there are some vegans who will go to lengths to disuade everyone from all the things they don't eat. There are a few who will spread lies (some diliberately, most unknowingly) such as that cheese is made from spoiled milk. Cheese is simply the milk solids that have been removed from the whey (milk liquid) by adding naturally occuring enzymes. Cheese has been made with these enzymes for hundreds of years. The milk solids are then shaped into balls, rounds, or wheels. Then they are pressed to express more liquid til the desired amount of moisture is left. Soft cheese had more liquid & aged cheese like cheddar has less. If you do decide to eat cheese, just remember that it is a fatty food but chocked full of complete proteins and calcium. Rule of thumb, moderation. If you are still unsure, call a dietation for more info.
